Redknapp captures Viduka for Pompey
By SIMON JONES - More by this author »

Last updated at 01:42am on 12th May 2007

Portsmouth look to have won the race for Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka.

The Australian is a free agent this summer and was one of the most sought after players in the Premiership with Everton, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Sunderland and Newcastle all keen.

Middlesbrough were desperate for the 31-year-old to stay but he was convinced by Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp that the club could match his ambitions and his wages of around £60,000 a week.

David James, 37 in August, has signed a one-year extension to his Portsmouth contract, keeping him at Fratton Park until the summer of 2009.

Middlesbrough right back Stuart Parnaby, who has interested Everton and Ipswich, has been told he will be allowed to leave at the end of the season, taking the number of players manager Gareth Southgate has culled in less than a year to 12.

What about this is a slap in the face to SBS? That he's decided not to take the gamble of going to Genoa and away from Foster's hated EPL? Or is there something I'm missing?

Yeah I am confused also. You simply posted an article and then badmouthed SBS (who by the way have been the most supporting TV Channel of this sport for years).

Hate an SBS analyst all you want, but I dont understand the hate on the actual network. If it werent for them, we would not have seen all these World Cups over the years and all the other football matches and competitions that they have always shown.

Didn't SBS have the rights to the EPL before Fox Sports bought them? The Anti-English agenda of SBS is a bit much but it does hold some weight, the poor form of the English national team over the years is testament of that.

Anyway, Viduka still has alot to offer and I'm glad he's not comming back to Australia just yet. I would like to see him return in a year or two.

And Frontliner...please take your cause back to The World Game forums.

Just because Foster doesnt like the EPL doesnt mean the entire network hates it. If it werent for SBS, then football wouldnt be getting any coverage in this country at all. Period.

Not many people are going to value your opinion when you rate World Soccer as the greatest magazine mate.

Yes, all games of the Asian Cup are being shown on Fox, much like the Euro Cup
