EXCLUSIVE: Sydney FC boss Vitezslav Lavicka says he is one piece short of completing his squad jigsaw but insists he won't make any hasty decisions on a new central defender.

The coach is not unhappy with the players he already has in his backline - the Moore Park men having conceded just one goal in 10 pre-season games - but is keen to bring in another proven centre half before the start of the A-League campaign.

As he prepared for another test against Newcastle Jets in Port Macquarie on Sunday, the coach revealed there were irons in the fire but there was no need to make a hasty choice.

Lavicka told au.fourfourtwo.com: "I think (we still need) one player only but we cannot be hurried over this position for the centre of defence."

The coach is far from gloomy about the players already on the books which makes him comfortable with his no-rush approach to the vacancy.

"We have good players in that position with Simon Colosimo, Matt Jurman, Mitchell Prentice and Zach Cairncross," he said.

"But we are still looking for another and it must be the right one. We have several options but we are still to decide."

While keeping clean sheets is a key priority for the Sydney boss, he doesn't want them to be achieved at the expense of attractive play. He says results are key but also to give supporters plenty to cheer.

"Football is entertainment for fans. I want our supporters to come to games and be entertained. But it is a question of balance. The balance of results and entertainment," he said.

The three-day trip north ahead of Sunday's game is important for Lavicka.

He added: "We have only one camp out of Sydney, I think is short but important because every day is a chance to build up the team, every session is a chance to improve our performance.

"This game against Newcastle is very important part of our preparations, I am looking forward to it.  It is another step to be better."
