EXCLUSIVE:Australian recruits will risk falling off the international radar to head across the ditch for the stability of a well-run club, says Ross Aloisi.
In a week when New Zealand's World Cup hopes are getting as much column inches in Australia as the Socceroos Asian Cup mission in Oman, Aloisi believes Ricki Herbert will be a strong shout for coach of the year if he can deliver domestic and world success.
Aloisi admits signing for Wellington Phoenix makes it more of a challenge to catch the eye of green and gold spies but players are willing to take the step anyway to enjoy other rewards instead.
"It's an issue I spoke to Ricki Herbert about when I was at Phoenix," Aloisi told au.fourfourtwo.com today. "I think you know that when you're in New Zealand, you're not being scrutinised day in and day out.
"But players look at the club, the facilities, the way it is run, a good owner and CEO, the way it engages with the community and the support from the fans and they want to be part of it.
"You have players who have just signed new deals with the club because they're happy with life there.
"The price perhaps though is that you're not going to be in the (international) frame in the way that someone playing in Australia might be.
"Take Andrew Durante for example - I'm not saying he should be in the Socceroos, absolutely not - but maybe he would be more on the radar if he was a player at an Australian-based club."
Aloisi believes Herbert deserves huge credit for his recruitment process.
"You look at the number of times Wellington have fallen behind in a game this season, only to get back into it," he said. "That says a lot about the fighting spirit and the character of the players he has brought in.
"Ricki is a very positive person who has the respect of his players. I think the crowd there is another very positive factor.
"They really get behind the team and you don't tend to hear them booing the minute something doesn't go their team's way. They were great to me and treated me like a king.
"I hope their A-League future can be sorted out but I guess that's with the FFA now."
As for the All-Whites, Aloisi hopes Herbert can get them over the line to South Africa.
He added: "It will be a full house and I think the atmosphere will just spur New Zealand on. It would be massive for football in New Zealand if they can get there, no question."
