MELBOURNE Heart coach John van 't Schip and goalscorer John Aloisi said Friday's 2-1 derby win over rivals Victory was exactly what the fledgling club needed as it builds its supporter base.
Heart were the better side in front of over 25,000 fans at AAMI Park, producing some excellent football particularly down the wings which van 't Schip said would help the club attract more fans.
"It was very important to play well first - and I thought we played very well - and then to win makes it better," he said.
"We all know we've come a long way and we're working very hard on our supporter base. We already have a wonderful group of supporters standing behind us but I think we've won a lot (more) of them for us.
"I think it was a good game, it was a wonderful game for the people to see, it was an open game."
Former Socceroo Aloisi, who scored the opening goal of the contest, added the result would make a difference as the club tries to grow.
"(It was) massive for us. We need to grow the support of this club and winning tonight will help us," he said.
"Victory have got a lot of supporters and we want to get as big as them so by winning tonight it helps us a lot."
Victory skipper Kevin Muscat echoed their sentiment when he said after the match the code was the winner.
"Football was the winner tonight, hopefully everyone enjoyed the spectacle who was here," he said.
Muscat added he was disappointed by the result which leaves the Victory on 11 points and sitting in sixth.
"I don't know if it (the performance) was disappointing. We're disappointed in the result," he said.
"Our fans turned up and created an atmosphere in this stadium which was second to none, so that's the most disappointing thing for me, not getting the result they so craved."
