World News Record Fine For Hearts

Hearts have been hit with a record $50,000 fine for their poor disciplinary record last season.

The Edinburgh outfit had been warned after fines of $12,500 and $25,000 in the previous two seasons and their punishment was doubled again by the Scottish Football Association.

Dunfermline, Hibernian and Falkirk were also handed minimum fines of $12,500 for their on-field indiscipline.

Hearts players were issued with nine red cards and 92 cautions last season and the club were further warned over their behaviour in January.

Only relegated Dunfermline incurred more disciplinary points in the Scottish Premier League last season, being hit with six sendings-off and 114 bookings.

Hibernian, who were shown 10 red cards, and Falkirk, who received seven, were fined after failing to heed previous warnings.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, St Mirren and Celtic were commended for their records with the Buddies given a special mention for avoiding any red cards.

Gus MacPherson's men also had the fewest bookings of any SPL club at 58.

A total of 21 clubs throughout the senior leagues were given fines by the SFA, with three of them suspended.

Forfar received the biggest sanction among the Irn-Bru Scottish Football League clubs, at $5,000, while Stranraer, Berwick and Montrose were fined $2,500 and Alloa had a similar punishment suspended.

Livingston, Elgin and Arbroath were warned about their behaviour, while Morton and Dumbarton were commended.

Hearts have accepted the record fine.

A club spokesman said: "We knew ourselves that our on-field disciplinary record was not acceptable and during the close season took steps to remedy the matter.

"We take the matter very seriously and internally will continue to monitor the situation."
