NEW LA Galaxy coach Ruud Gullit has vowed his underperforming MLS club will play “sexy football, starting in two weeks against John Kosmina's Sydney FC at Telstra Stadium.

"I think (sexy football) is football that you like to see and you enjoy yourself," said Gullit after he was unveiled in Los Angeles.

"I think it's an expression that you can use in all kinds of things. Hopefully we can play as good as possible, but there are going to be moments when you can't,” reported the LA Times.

"I hope to find a team that is curious, that is ambitious and that plays with its heart," he added.

Gullit will be assisted by former US national team star Cobi Jones who will be his second in charge.

Even before Gullit got the LA job after Frank Yallop quit to join the San Jose Earthquakes last week, interest in the game has “gone through the roof”, an insider at host broadcaster Channel 10 tells au.fourfourtwo.com.

It was Gullit himself who, as a TV pundit, coined the phrase “sexy football” almost a decade ago. Now he has vowed he'll transform Galaxy into a winning side while entertaining the fans.

“A club like LA Galaxy is a club that is used to winning things. We will do everything in our power to win. It's a huge challenge, but also a privilege,” he said.

It's expected that 80,000 fans will see the game live at Telstra Stadium, and with Sydney FC in good form under new coach John Kosmina, it all points to an intriguing night's entertainment.

However, Sydney's clash with Queensland Roar two days before is likely to be a stern test. How much this takes out of Kosmina's side remains to be seen as they back up for their glamour midweek clash.

As for David Beckham, he's been called up for England and will play in next Friday's friendly against Austria before the crunch Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia on Nov 21. He'll then fly into Sydney for the showpiece event.

On Sunday, Beckham played 73 minutes in a friendly for LA Galaxy against second tier USL team Minnesota Thunder.

The MLS side men won in a shootout after the game - dubbed the "Copa Minnesota" - was locked at 1-1.
