ZINEDINE Zidane has cancelled this weekend's legends match at Sydney Football Stadium.

The French midfield genius was due to field a side of 1998 French World Cup heroes against 1997-era Australian veterans including SBS's Craig Foster.

But the game - to be held on the same day as the Socceroos match against Iraq in Brisbane - always seemed to be in doubt.

It attracted very little publicity and there were no reports on notable ticket sales.

Zidane has been playing in Tahiti and New Caledonia this month but a statement said he was pulling out of the Sydney game for personal reasons.

A spokeswoman added the match had then been axed as "...it would be like going to see LA Galaxy without Beckham."
