The Scotsman, who last played against Adelaide United in Round 16 last season, has made steady progress after spending time in his homeland and described last year as one of the most difficult he has experienced.
“It was good to get away from everywhere and just being able to focus on getting myself right,” Brebner said.
“Last year was personally one of the worst I’ve had, in terms of how I felt.
“I think there were only two games last year where I actually felt 100 per cent.
“We all knew what was going on, with the medical staff and myself, and we just kept hoping and praying that it was going to get better through doing work off the park.
“But it never materialised and then it just got to a stage where I couldn’t enjoy what I was doing and I think it was obvious to everyone.
“You’ve not got a pulled muscle, you’ve not got a broken leg, so there’s no timeframe of how you should get better and how you should treat it.”
Brebner added that he is looking forward to the competition that will exist for places in the starting 11 each week and is eager to be part of a successful side in 2008/09.
“You can’t spend as long as I have out of the game and not be driven and determined to do well.
“I’m still 30 years old and I hope I have another three or four years left.
“I’m desperate to get back, I’m desperate to get in that team and do well.
“We’re going into a new season, we’re hopeful.
“This season we’re going to prove to people that we are a team that should be up there and should be winning things.
“We believe we are, but there’s no point talking about it, we now need to go out and show it.
“We’ve certainly got a better squad to choose from and the competition is going to be good.”
