THURSDAY'S UEFA Cup second qualifying round tie between WIT Georgia and Austria Vienna is to be played in Turkey because of the political situation in Georgia, UEFA have confirmed.

Georgia launched an attack last week in an attempt to regain control over South Ossetia, and Russian forces responded by sending in troops and conducting air strikes, killing hundreds of civilians.

Thursday's game was scheduled to be played at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi but will now be played in Rize, Turkey after Tbilisi was bombed on Monday morning.

On Tuesday, the Football Association of Ireland wrote to FIFA, UEFA and the Georgian Football Association asking for their World Cup qualifier against Georgia on September 6 to be moved to a neutral venue.

FIFA have said they are closely monitoring the situation in Georgia.
