EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne Victory's Rodrigo Vargas has ruled out moving overseas as he builds his burgeoning career in the A-League.

"Maybe earlier in my career I would've thought about going overseas but these days it's different," Vargas, 29, told au.fourfourtwo.com.

This year has been a landmark one for the intelligent central defender. In January he was brought into the national set up by Pim Verbeek, impressed with the Chilean heritage Australian's ability and nous.

"I'm a Melbourne boy and I'm very settled at the club," he said. "I don't see myself going overseas at this stage of my career."

Although he didn't make the final cut, the Victory man was part of Verbeek's Super June squads with a role on the bench. Yet just two years ago, he was a Victorian State League player.

However Vargas is remaining tightlipped on his chances of making the Socceroos for the Asian Cup qualifiers starting on January 14 against Kuwait on the Gold Coast.

In the height of an Australian summer and with A-League players at their physical peak, there's little doubt the squad will be largely A-League based.

Vargas would appear one of the defensive options for Verbeek along with his club mate at Victory, Michael Thwaite.

"I've just got to perform at my club," he added. "Once that happens who knows, but right now, I'm focusing on that.

"But of course it's a huge honour for me to play for Australia."
