EXCLUSIVE: Socceroo legend Paul Wade speaks in this month's issue about marking Maradona, his feud with new Gold Coast coach Paul Okon and the illness he hid for years.
Wade answered a variety of readers' questions including the Socceroos of the 80s and 90s and his stellar club career at South Melbourne.Asked about marking Maradona in the 1993 World Cup qualifier, Wade revealed how he felt as he waited to walk out onto the SFS.
"I remember the sound of the metal studs coming down the concrete of the tunnel and I'm like 'wow that's him'," admitted Wade.
"I'd seen him on telly all that week and I shook his hand and said, 'Happy Birthday'. He just bowed his head and had a big smile on his face.
"And I looked down and he had photographs of his two kids on his armband, and I thought, 'I should've done that'."
Wade is also candid about the illness that he hid for many years, an illness that required a life-threatening operation.
