EXCLUSIVE: Josh Kennedy has raised the bar and now has to show he can keep to the standard says a former colleague who knows his painful path to Socceroo stardom.
The German-based striker nodded Australia’s winner against Holland on Sunday and created history in the process (a first ever win over the Dutch).Kennedy has fought his way back into the green and gold after injury wiped out a whole season of his career.
Ahmad Elrich can appreciate that better than most as he prepares for a knee operation this week, his season having been ended.
Elrich played with Kennedy at the 2001 Under 20 World Cup in Argentina and feels Australia are a benefiting from a player who is now stronger and smarter.
The Central Coast Mariners wide man told au.fourfourtwo.com: “Josh was good in the air at that point but I think all the guys at that stage are still a bit raw.
“I see a guy now who is a stronger, smarter player. He was always good in the air but now he is holding the ball up well and bringing others into play.
“He’s had a terrible time with injuries but he has worked hard to get back and that hard work has been rewarded. I’m pleased for him.
“Josh is a target man and Mark Viduka aside we don’t really have that. He has raised the bar and now he has to show he can keep to the standard.”
Elrich also believes Kennedy’s Dutch heroics won’t go to his head. He said: “I think he’s a humble guy and he’ll just keep working hard and won’t let anything go to his head.”
As for Elrich, he is remaining upbeat about the future, despite his cruciate injury – the second of his career.
He said: “You get set-backs in life. Nobody wants to be injured but you have to face up to it. It is the way you bounce back that tells you about your character.
“I’m staying positive, you have to.”
