CENTRAL Coast Mariners have collected their first Westfield W-League win, following a 3-1 defeat of Perth Glory at Parramatta Stadium.
Westfield Matilda Renee Rollason was the hero for the home side – her second half brace securing the yellow and navy their first points in Australia’s exciting new domestic football competition for women, after Trudy Camilleri scored the historic first ever Mariners Westfield W-League goal.Shannon May responded with what was ultimately a consolation for the Glory towards the end of the match, but there was to be no denying the Mariners their breakthrough win of the Westfield W-League 2008/09 season.
Despite both sides being hit with a significant list of absentees due to the Westfield Young Matildas’ AFC Under-19’s Women’s Championships qualifying commitments, the match was a largely open and entertaining affair.
The Mariners’ overall dominance of possession eventually paid dividends when an exceptional forward run by Stephanie Haim down the left flank provided the opening goal.
Haim used all of her strength and experience to cross from the bi-line and into the path of Gill Foster, with Foster’s touch towards goal played into the path of Camilleri, who duly netted from close range.
Rollason’s first came direct from a corner that caught the Glory rear guard napping – the ball evading intervention from any attackers or defenders and crashing into the back of the net to double the Mariners’ lead.
Though May pulled one back for the visitors with five minutes of regulation time still to play, Rollason’s penalty in stoppage time made sure of an extremely positive result for a Mariners side that was eager to bounce back from last week’s opening round loss.
"We were much better than last week, most definitely," said Mariners Westfield W-League Head Coach Stephen Roche after the match.
"I felt we were quite flat against Melbourne Victory, though tonight we were much more comfortable on the ball, and we moved it around very well.
"Our midfielders had a great match and Renee scoring a double was fantastic and I expect this result to boost our confidence ahead of our next match."
