Some 12 months after being deemed good enough to enter the competition, Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners have kicked off their Asian Champions League campaigns in underwhelming style. A Griffiths family affair ended in 2-0 defeat for Newcastle Jets, while the Mariners followed that up with a home stalemate.
Elsewhere, Australia have slid down the rankings out of FIFA's Top 30 following their recent run of mediocre results in the Asian Cup qualifiers, while Mark Schwarzer has laughed off unflattering comments made by former Socceroo number two Zeljko Kalac.
