Your Week in Football

Fortune has favoured the Central Coast and Sydney in a controversial weekend of A-League action. Fury coach Franz Straka has stayed quiet after the Fury were denied a late penalty in the opening match against the Mariners. Central Coast have strengthened their grip on third place on the table with three games still in hand while North Queensland have dropped below Sydney.

Sydney boss Lavicka has praised lady luck for her assist in Sydney's first win at home this season. A controversial late Bruno Cazarine goal has broken Jets' hearts and revived Sydney's season, climbing off the foot of the table for the first time in two months.

Two weeks ago, some had began to speculate whether the A-League had turned into a two horse race. Pundits had their mouths watering at the coming game between Adelaide and Brisbane. It was not the close contest expected with a ten-man Brisbane destroying the Reds. The four goal demolition now has some claiming the Roar are the best team ever to play in the A-League. Why not stop by on the forums and give us your opinion?

Gold Coast upset Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night with Rodrigo Vargas putting the ball past his own keeper in the 55th minute. The win puts Gold Coast equal on points with the Mariners, behind only on goal difference.

In the other Sunday match, Perth's horror run continued as they lost at home to the Phoenix. Perth's sorry run now stretches to eight losses out of their last nine games. Tough times ahead for the Glory as they must face second-placed Adelaide without skipper Jacob Burns on Wednesday night.

It was a weekend of upsets in the Premier League with Fernando Torres putting two past Chelsea, giving Liverpool their fourth win of the season and pushing the Reds into the top half of the table. Torres has stated in the media that his 'best is yet to come', sending out a brutal warning to the rest of the Premier League.

Similarly, Andy Carroll has impressed by providing Newcastle with a win against Arsenal. The youngster staked his claim for an England place by putting away a first-half header in front of a crowd that included England boss Fabio Capello.

A big shout out to Aussie Timmy Cahill, who has scored his 50th goal in the Barclays Premier League in a 2-2 draw at Blackpool.

FFA boss Frank Lowy has finally admitted the possibility of Australia losing their bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but has remained optimistic at winning the December 2 vote. Regardless of whether Australia wins the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, one boy who wants to be playing in it is Harry Kewell's son Taylor who 'wants to be like dad!' If he has a fraction of his father's skill, then Australia will be in very good hands come 2022.
